In our world we tend to view Jesus’ birth as the beginning of everything. We even use His birth as a beginning of a transition of a knew way of keeping track of time and years of both the past and the present, hence BC (Before Christ) and AD (After Death). Therefore, for some they view the birth as the beginning of everything. However, when Hebrews and John talk about the Messiah from the beginning, we find that the beginning goes much farther back than most will see or understand.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The beginning that John is talking about is not the beginning of Christ’s birth. The beginning of this story starts much farther back to the beginning of all of creation. “He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made that has been made.” Jesus has been God and has been with God from the beginning. Jesus tells us that if we see Him, we have seen the Father because they are one and the same.
For many years and maybe centuries the world has been trying to take Christ out of our Christmas celebration. Celebrating Christmas may be no more than something that is traditional in the church but the purpose and history of this celebration is remembering the gift that God gave to all of mankind. I have heard so many people having the opinion that they wish that Christianity could be removed from this holiday. However, what these same people lack in knowledge is that Christmas is a Christian tradition. Not all about Santa Claus and flying Reindeer. In fact, I am sure that Saint Nicholas would be upset today if he could see what his kindness in giving to others has turned into. These people love the time off and all of the gifts and stores love all of the purchases. However, this is not the meaning of Christmas. Christmas’ beginning starts from a promise from the beginning of creation. God promised to save the world from the sins of the world. Hence, he came to earth as a child to do just that.
Hebrews tells us that “in the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” The Word was spoken in the beginning through the prophets but what we celebrate now is when the Word came into the world to speak for himself. He was there in the beginning and through his word and command the universe was created.
The same people who try to take Christ out of Christmas also try to take the Lord out of all of creation. If there is no Christ and if there is no God then there is nothing to keep them accountable for anything they do in life. However, no matter how much they try to censor and no matter how much they try to create another explanation for creation, they never hold any weight. Christ will never be able to be taken out of Christmas because Christ was there from the beginning and Christ will always be. No matter how much others try to deny the truth of Christmas, the truth will never change.
For this Christmas we have been given good news that Christ was born. We have also been given even greater news that Christ will return. All of the things we have in this world are meaningless as they will wither away. However, salvation in Christ lasts forever. Let us remember Christ from the beginning this Christmas and remember the salvation that has been brought to us. This is a message of truth that we must share with the world.
